Acer saccharinum in late September

Acer saccharinum in late September

Across the drive, the path becomes a grass nutwalk that curves round to reach the folly. Made exclusively of pale sandstone, this modern but classically- inspired "monopteros" presents outstanding views down to the main house along an informal avenue of young Japanese flowering cherries. Mature trees, including Scots pine, acer rubrum, acer saccharinum, hornbeam and robinia spread across a spectacular four acre meadow. This meadow is at its zenith in the spring, starting with crocus and species narcissuss, followed by a surfeit of fritillaries, primulas, anemones and pheasants-eye narcissus. The path along the outside of the meadow meanders toward the west to reveal marvellous sunset views across the horse paddocks before winding back toward the main house through a recently planted alley of hamamelis and cornus mas to enter the New Garden.

Designed and planted in sympathy with the meadow parkland this garden is nonetheless given definition by a meandering line of viburnums. It enjoys a denser planting of young ornamental trees, including Chinese birches, golden rain tree, cornus, cherries and maples. Paths criss-cross through large shrub roses which have been under planted with generous quantities of naturalised snowdrops, scilla, species tulips and camassias. Just beyond, in the living roof garden above a farm building, lilacs, persicaria and shrub roses thrive. Across the drive, the visitor's journey reaches its completion, returning to the West Garden, past the borders of the converted stable block which have been planted along traditional English cottage garden lines.
