The Leaf Battle
One of the most arduous tasks of the garden year is our autumnal battle with fallen leaves. Over the period from late September to mid-December the garden team spends about 100 man-hours clearing leaves from lawns and paths. The biggest culprit by far is our ancient horse chestnut in front of the house. Twice a week, the leaves from under the chestnut are blown onto the lawn, raked together and then “hoovered up” with our trusty and versatile “Terra Vac”, previously mentioned in our January 2017 column. The crushed leaves form the basis of next year’s batch of leaf compost.
